  • This pair is one-of-a-kind! We photograph each one-of-a-kind pair individually, so the shoes you see in the two main images are exactly what you will receive.
  • Upper made from a hand-selected textile (learn more below). Leather sole with 3/4 inch heel.
  • Handmade in Istanbul in a small, family-owned workshop.

Sumak (also spelled Soumak, Soumakh, Sumac, and Soumac) kilims are crafted from a mixture of wool and silk, and have a stronger weave and a more textural hand than other types of kilim carpets. They are known for their intricate designs that incorporate finely detailed symbols, figures, and representations of animals. The crisp and boldly contrasting blues, reds, and whites often featured in Sumak kilims make them a favorite among our community.

Each of our Sumak Kilim pieces is handmade from one-of-a-kind Turkish carpets, which means that no two will ever be alike. We photograph each item individually, so what you see on the product page is exactly what you'll receive.

If you plan on using your shoes for daily walks, you may extend the life of the soles by asking your local cobbler to attach a rubber sole to them.

The textile and leather sole are very durable and will age well with time. Avoid rain or snow, but if your shoes do become a little bit wet, that’s ok; just let them dry out completely and continue wearing as usual.

To clean stains, blot with a warm washcloth. Let heavier dirt or mud stains dry, and once dried, brush them off with a bristle brush.

FAQs

Since our products are made from vintage textiles, each pair we make is completely unique! Even two pairs cut from the same carpet can look very different depending on placement of the pattern, borders vs. interior, etc.

The carpets themselves are vintage, generally with some sort of damage that makes them no longer suitable for use in a home. We repurpose the intact parts as shoes and accessories.

Yes! We photograph each pair of our one-of-a-kind shoes individually, so the two main images at the very top of the page are exactly what you'll receive. Additional images and videos are of other Women's Loafers, just to show you the style in action.

Unfortunately not. The beauty of our Kilim shoes and handbags is that each one is one of a kind, completely unique, and you will be the only person who has them! For this reason, we cannot replicate a pair of Kilim shoes that has already sold, or create a custom pair in your size. We use large pieces of Kilim textile to create the shoes, so it is possible that we have a similar looking pair in your size that is “cut from the same cloth”, but we cannot guarantee it, and we cannot re-create a “sold out” pair.

We release new batches of inventory most Thursdays at noon, and always notify our email list of what’s been added to the site. You can join the Flying Carpet Shoe Club to find out about new stock, new collections and the latest happenings at Artemis (and also to receive a 10% welcome discount!). We promise not to flood your inbox, and to only reach out to you if we have something really exciting to share!
